CPAP is continuous positive airway pressure and is necessary to millions of people throughout the world. The need for CPAP is due to a condition referred to as Obstructive Sleep Apnea which occur when the airway collapses and breathing temporarily stops. There are different factors that can lead to obstructive sleep apnea which include decreased muscle tone that inhibits holding open the airway, extra tissue in the airway or even a large tongue. Before CPAP, patients that suffered from obstructive sleep apnea could only be treated by inserting tubes through the throat after a very invasive tracheotomy procedure. In 1981, an Australian Dr. took a vacuum motor and changed the lives of millions. The motor on the vacuum cleaner was reversed, tubes were attached and the CPAP was born. Dr. Sullivan and a few of his associates found that by creating a way to generate continuous positive airway pressure, the tracheotomy was not necessary. CPAP improved over the years with machines that are smaller and a lot quieter than the reversed vacuum motor.

When someone does experience obstructive sleep apnea, pauses in breathing can occur up to 30 times or more an hour.
